Southwest (NH) Region Planning Commission

Tim Murphy serves as Executive Director of the Southwest Region Planning Commission based in Keene, NH where he has served since 1995. He has over 35 years’ experience as a regional planner. In his current position, Tim has worked to establish effective planning programs to benefit the 33 communities of Southwest NH. Focus includes conducting research and analyses to identify trends and conditions in the Region and developing strategies in response to challenges and opportunities. Fundamental in his approach are the concepts of integrated planning, striking a balance among a range of important public policy initiatives, and working in partnership among a full range of stakeholders.

Prior experience includes employment with the South Florida Regional Planning Council from 1985-1995. In his service in this diverse region, Tim began as an entry-level Planner and grew with the organization ultimately serving as its Deputy Director from 1992-1995. Focus included large-scale development review, ecosystem restoration, promoting mixed-use development, emergency management, economic development, and innovative approaches to the use of impact fees.

Tim holds a master’s degree in Geography with a concentration in City and Regional Planning from Eastern Michigan University. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in interdisciplinary studies focused in Geography, Environmental Sciences, and Sociology.

Tim has demonstrated a commitment to serving as a catalyst for guiding creative and positive change. With the support of his Board of Directors, he has taken a leadership role in initiating and coordinating the involvement of NH’s regional planning commissions in a range of successful programmatic activities. Among others, these include addressing environmental issues, community, and economic development, emergency management, re-use of contaminated properties, public health planning, and broadband infrastructure.

Tim has served on a number of local and state boards. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Greater Keene and Peterborough Chamber (past Chair), the Leadership Council for a Healthy Monadnock (past Chair), and the NH Association of Regional Planning Commissions. Other boards on which he has served include the NH Public-Private Partnership Infrastructure Oversight Commission, NH Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (past Vice Chair), Keene Downtown Housing Corporation (past Chair), Monadnock Conservancy, Salvation Army, Keene Day Care Center, Monadnock Connect, and Leadership Monadnock.

Tim was born and raised in Greater Detroit, Michigan. He and his wife Pam live in Keene, NH.
